Tony Dixon in the afternoon on Sunshine Radio

Tony Dixon (RIP) was one of the best-known DJs on Dublin’s Sunshine Radio in the 1980s, presenting a daily show every afternoon and also a popular weekend soul programme. This recording from 1982 is of part of Tony’s lunchtime show with the usual mix of music, chat and dedications. The soundtrack of the afternoon features music from James Bond movies and there is a promo for a competition to win a house worth £45,000, an example of the eye-watering giveaways on larger pirate stations like Sunshine and Radio Nova during this period.

Tony also mentions the Sunshine Radio election special that was broadcast every evening. The involvement of pirate radio in elections in the 1980s was controversial because of several failed efforts to bring forward legislation to licence local radio. Sunshine Radio took the unprecedented step of publishing a newspaper advertisment in support of Fianna Fáil in the February 1982 election because that party had committed to introducing local commercial radio.

After a long career in pirate and licensed radio, Tony died prematurely on 25^th November 2010. This recording was made on Tuesday 9^th February 1982 between 1210-1255 from 91.6 FM and is courtesy of Shay Geoghegan.

Tony Dixon with soul songs on Sunshine Radio

This recording of a Saturday night in 1985 on Sunday super-pirate Sunshine Radio gives a flavour of the variety in the station’s weekend schedule during this period. First up are soul and love songs with one of the station’s high-profile DJs, Tony Dixon (RIP). He is followed by Elliott John and Sunshine Street Beat. The usual high-level adverts for Dublin businesses and national brands are heard and there is a promo for a cash prize for listeners. Tony Dixon continued to broadcast on licensed radio until his untimely death in 2010.

Sunshine Radio was based at the Sands Hotel in Portmarnock on the northside of Dublin during its eight-year existence. This tape was made from 101.5 FM from 2019-2104 on 12^th October 1985 and is from the Anoraks Ireland Collection.

Tony Dixon on early Sunshine Radio

Tony Dixon (RIP) was one of the popular DJs on Sunshine Radio, a large and successful pirate that broke the mould in Irish local radio when it came on the air in September 1980. In this short recording from the station’s early days, he is heard on a Sunday night programme that includes the tagline ‘Dance Radio – Sunshine 539’, highlighting the station’s emphasis on that genre of music after its launch. There’s also mention of Tamango’s nightclub that advertised heavily on Sunshine and was based next door at the Sands Hotel in Portmarnock. The tape ends with the iconic Desiderata that closed down Sunshine every night, followed by the station’s theme song ‘You are my sunshine’. Tony Dixon went on to have a career on licensed radio but died prematurely in 2010.

The airchecked recording was made from between 2000 and 2100 on 12^th January 1981 from 531 kHz AM, announced as 539 metres, and is from the Anoraks Ireland Tapes Collection.

John Dolan on Sunshine Radio

John Dolan (real name Tadhg Dolan) worked in the first Cork pirates CBC and CCLR in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He also did some shows on Sunshine Radio in Dublin as well as stints with RTÉ’s Cork Local Radio and licensed station Radio South (later Cork’s 96 FM).

This airchecked recording is of John’s first show on Sunshine Radio between 1955-2100 sometime in May 1981. Audio is fair as the recording was made by placing a cassette recorder up against a radio. John is introduced by the previous DJ, Tony Dixon (RIP) and the voice of Sunshine boss Robbie Robinson (RIP) is heard on some of the adverts. Broadcasting ends at 2100 with the iconic Desiderata song, which closed the station down each night.
