This recording of the weekly Radio West Anoraks’ Show from summer 1986 includes legendary broadcaster Bob Gallico (RIP) as a guest in studio with station boss Shaun Coyne and Phil Hilton. Bob talks about his love for radio since his youth in the US and explains how he landed a job reading news with Radio Nova in Dublin. The panel discusses the evolution of the pirate scene in recent years and speculates about its future. There is also discussion of Dublin station Q102, to which Bob has recently moved. Other stations mentioned are WLCB in Wicklow, new Dundalk station CLR, ERI and WBEN in Cork, Capitol-Nitesky 96, Liberties Radio, KISS FM and Energy 103 in Dublin, Zee 104 in Kildare, Kandy Radio in Ballinasloe and Radio Rainbow International in Louth.

The tape was made from 765 kHz between 1122-1200 (with a few edits) on Sunday 6th July 1986 and is from the Anoraks Ireland Collection.

This edition of the Radio West Anoraks’ Show was recorded in June 1986, a few months after the show first occupied its weekly slot on the midlands pirate. On air in this show are Phil Hilton and station boss Shaun Coyne, who reports on the pirate scene in London following a recent visit. There is a phone call from ABC Radio in Waterford and other stations featured include new Galway station Emerald FM, new Louth pirate East Coast Radio and the large Cork station ERI, which is temporarily off the air. Commercial breaks include a promo for Anoraks UK voiced by the legendary Bob Gallico (RIP) and the programme is relayed by shortwave pirate Radio Rainbow International.

The recording was made from 765 kHz AM between 1111-1159 on Sunday 15th June 1986 and is from the Anoraks Ireland Collection.

This is part of the weekly Radio West Anoraks’ Show from spring 1986, presented by Phil Hilton and station boss Shaun Coyne. Stations discussed include Centre Radio in Kildare, the new Independent Radio Longford, Big M in Monaghan, Cavan Community Radio and Boyneside Radio. There are letters from people selling AM and FM transmitters and reference to DX programmes broadcast on public broadcasters around Europe.

The recording is from the Anoraks Ireland Collection and was made from 765 kHz AM between 1136-1200 on Sunday 18th May 1986.

Following its rebranding in 1986, Sunshine Radio became the biggest station in Dublin, a position that it held until its closedown at the end of 1988. Renamed Sunshine 101, the changes ushered in by US radio consultant Bill Cunningham included the end of many specialist shows and a shift from a community feel to a successful commercial operation.

This recording is of a live overnight show from spring 1987 hosted by Phil Hilton. There are few adverts as would be expected for the time of night but a promo for the BIg Kahuna competition is aired. The Big Kahuna allowed someone to become a DJ for the day and launched a few radio careers. News at 0206 is read by Joyce Jackson – one of the aspects of the rebranding was to move news bulletins away from the top of the hour slot.

The tape is from the Anoraks Ireland Collection and was made from 100.5 FM on Tuesday 28th April 1987 between 0131-0217. Audio is generally good but there is some wobble at the start due to cassette degradation.

Radio West broadcast from Mullingar from 1982 until the end of 1988 and achieved wide coverage after it began using the former Radio Nova 10kW transmitter on 765 kHz and later 702 kHz. It was popular with radio watchers because of the lively and often unpredictable Sunday morning Anoraks Show presented by station owner Shaun Coyne and others. A diet of radio gossip, colourful rumours and regular updates from anoraks throughout the country made the show essential listening each week.

This edition of the Anoraks Show was recorded in Dublin from 765 kHz from 1100-1230 on 8th June 1986 and features Philip Hilton with Shaun Coyne. There’s a promise of link-ups with ABC in Waterford and WKLR in Cork but these don’t materialise and the presenters joke that these stations are blacklisted! The Anoraks Show is followed at midday by the first half hour of the traditional music programme Céilí Lár Tíre.
