On Tuesday, 30th April 2002, the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland announced that BEAT 101 was the successful applicant for the new regional radio licence for the South East of Ireland (Counties Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny, Carlow and South Tipperary).  This is the first service of this type to be licensed by the Commission. The Chairperson of the BCI, Mr. Conor J. Maguire, congratulated the successful consortium BEAT 101 and expressed commiserations to the consortium Power FM, who had been runner-up in the process. BEAT 102-103FM commenced transmissions in July 2003.
