JANUARY 1997: FM 104 DUBLIN

From January 1995, through to September 1997, I presented one of the most-listened to overnight radio shows: THE STEREO STEVE OVERNIGHT RADIO SHOW. The show featured "What's' On In Dublin", "Trivia Teaser Questions", "Today's Television", "Listener Requests", "The Mystery Sound", "Beat The Intro" and a selection of music which can only be described as 'dubious' at best.

Regretfully, I was not the one choosing what music should be played overnight. This was left to the infinite wisdom of the Musical Director - Dave Kelly. Dave had the happy knack of being able to pick up very quickly whenever I chose to play a track that was not printed on his precious 'playlist'! No matter what time it was during my on-air shift, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6am, Dave Kelly would call the studio direct line from his bedside and bark down the phone: "Stereo, what the f**k are you playing at? That's not on the F***ing playlist" Of course I would apologise, but I got away with playing quite a few of my own favourites during that time!!

Despite this severe musical handicap, my overnight radio show was one of the most popular overnight shows in Dublin city.

The studio in this photograph was on the second floor of a building called The Ballast Office in Dublin's City Centre. The station later moved to new offices in Hume House, in the Ballsbridge area of Dublin.
