JUNE 1986: RADIO RAINBOW INTERNATIONAL, TOGHER, COUNTY LOUTH.

This is the BIG Short Wave transmitter of Radio Rainbow International. Up to this, most Free Radio (pirate) stations using the 48 metre band (Short Wave) used output power ranging from 20 to 150 watts. Thanks to Eddie Caffrey and his genius, he put on a transmitter with excess of ONE KILOWATT! This was unheard of up to now. Each Sunday from 10:00 to 13:00, the station blasted the short wave band on 6240KHz, using a well-compressed audio signal with near 100 per cent modulation. The audio was further boosted to make the high frequencies stand out. The station received letters and reception reports from all over Europe - even as far as Russia. The operators of some English and European pirate stations even wrote to the station asking if the power of the transmission could be reduced in order to give the other pirates a chance of being heard on the band!

Radio Rainbow International was the 'Radio Nova' of the Short Wave band!! The photo below shows how the magic was created. To his credit, all this was home-built by Eddie. Not the safest by any means, but by far the strongest and clearest signal on the 48 metre band Short Wave!
