JANUARY 1989^: MILLENNIUM RADIO 88FM DUBLIN

This is Kieran Murray 'on-air', reading the Sports News, which followed the main evening news at 6.00pm. Although I knew practically nothing about sport, I really enjoyed the job. I don't think anyone noticed I hadn't a clue about the subject!

Here's an interesting fact: It was also after this bulletin that I was publicly humiliated by the Head of News Andrew Hanlon. While reading a bulletin which included a reference to someone being charged with "grievous bodily harm", I pronounced the word as "gree-vee-us". Andrew Hanlon, in front of all the station staff, gave me a telling-off and spoke to me as if I was a child. He said the correct pronunciation was 'greev-us'. He could have taken me aside and told me quietly, but instead he choose to reprimand me in front of all my colleagues. There are some things in life you never forget and that is one of them. I never forgot that incident.

Andrew Hanlon is now Head of News with TV3, Ireland's National commercial television station - and it makes me smile when I hear the news readers on that station , even today make that same mistake!
