JUNE 1983: RADIO CAROUSEL, NAVAN, COUNTY MEATH

This is the AM transmitter. It was located on the inside roof of the Navan Shopping Centre. It used 2 x 813 valves in the driver stage and 2 x 813 valves in the output stage. The transmitter frequency was controlled by a crystal which was cut to 1386 kiloHertz. The valves needed to be replaced ever three months or so. They cost IR£5 each and I had to import them from Russia. I used to get a ladder and climb up to the inside of the roof and then replace the valves. I was actually scared of heights, but my enthusiasm for radio helped me to overcome this - and get the replacement valves installed.

As a matter of interest, the transmitter power plug was connected to a general electricity supply for Navan Shopping Centre. This meant that the bill for electricity power was being paid for by the Centre! It was many years later before the shopping centre management found out that they had been paying for the power supply to the Radio Carousel transmitter, without knowing it!! It's not known if they insisted on back-payment in later years!
